about THE CHALLENGE

After the tragic loss of a loved one (read the story), Mo has decided to channel his emotions and sadness into something positive and extraordinary. He plans on undertaking the ultimate mountaineering challenge known as the 8 Summits.

What is it? The history…

The quest to climb the highest mountain on each of the world’s continents has captured the imagination of climbers and non-climbers throughout the world. In 1983, American mountaineer Richard Dick “Bass” set his sights on climbing the highest mountain on each continent. Bass started with six summits in 1983: Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Denali, Vinson and Kosciuszko. In 1985, he climbed Everest and became the first person to successfully reach all 7 summits. Ever since, this list of mountains have been named the Bass 7 Summits.

However, renowned mountaineer Reinhold Messner proposed a slightly different 7 Summits list to that of Bass. Messner argued that the true 7th summit was Puncak Jaya/carstensz pyramid in Indonesia rather than Australia’s Mt Kosciuszko. His argument was based on the notion that Oceania & mainland Australia are part of the same continent rather than just involving mainland Australia, and thus Puncak Jaya is higher. This list was termed the Messner 7 Summits.

With this in mind, a new challenge that incorporated both the Bass and the Messner lists was born. This challenge was called the 8 Summits.

Mo plans to take on the both the Bass and Messner list of 8 Summits but with the intention of speed climbing 6 out of the 8 summits each within 24 hours. This is speed climbing!
